We present you the Portuguese region of  Beira Baixa, Portugal.

This area is located in the central area of Portugal, and is surrounded by natural spaces. Do you know how many municipalities make it up? It is made up of 23 municipalities, in which you can enjoy its culture, landscapes and gastronomy.

How is your gastronomy? Its gastronomy is of an excellent quality, since many of its products have Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), such as sheep and goat from Beira; others have a Denomination of Origin (PDO), such as the Vinhos da DOC “Beira Interior”.

Its wonderful nature makes it perfect for hiking activities, as there are a wide variety of routes to discover. What will allow you to disconnect from the busy urban life.

Program

1st Day

  • Arrival in Penamacor. Guided tour of the town, where you will get to know the cultural heritage of the city such as the Castelo, the Torre de Menagem, the Torre do Relógio or the Igreja da Misericordia.
  • Lunch at “Jardim” restaurant, where you can taste typical products of the area, such as the spicy cheese from Beira Baixa.
  • Free afternoon.
  • Dinner at “A Cave” restaurant, we recommend you taste the churra do campo or the products of the Terras do Lince.

2nd Day

  • Breakfast.
  • In the morning, a guided visit to the Malcata Reserve, where you can observe the local fauna and flora.
  • Lunch with typical products of the area.
  • In the afternoon we will go to the Barragem da Meimoa, a dam located in the same reserve, where we can do canoeing.
  • Dinner at “Jardim” restaurant, where you can taste typical products of the area, such as the sheep of the Beira IGP.

3rd Day

  • Breakfast.
  • In the morning Rota da Vila, a 10km guided route and an approximate duration of three and a half hours, here we will see the old mining activity of the Minas do Palão and numerous buildings related to this activity.
  • Lunch at “2 Pinheiros” restaurant, where you can pro bar typical products of the area, such as churra do campo.
  • Free afternoon.
  • Dinner at “A Cave” restaurant, here you can taste typical products of the area, such as the products of the Terras do Lince.

4th Day

  • Breakfast.
  • Arrival in Idanha-A-Nova. Town located approximately 31 km from Penamacor.
  • Guided tour of the town, where you will visit the Idanha-a-Nova Monumental Complex.
  • Lunch at the “Portão Velho” restaurant, where you can taste typical products of the area, such as the DOC Beira Interior wine.
  • Free afternoon.
  • Dinner at “Helana “restaurant, we recommend you try the Picante da Beira Baixa Cheese, the Cabrito da Beira or the Callum Wine.

5th Day

  • Breakfast.
  • Rota das Minas, a 10km circular route that lasts between 3 and 4 hours. The route passes through the valley of the river Erges to visit an old gold, wolfram and cassiterite mine.
  • Lunch with typical products of the area, such as Cabrito da Beira or Callum Wine.
  • Free afternoon.
  • Dinner at “Helana” restaurant, we recommend you try the Picante da Beira Baixa Cheese, the Cabrito da Beira or the Callum Wine.

6th Day

  • Breakfast.
  • Visit to the Ichnological Park of Penha Garcia. In this natural space you can see different rock formations created thousands of years ago by the ocean, you can also see different types of fossils.
  • Lunch at “Baroa” restaurant, we recommend you try different typical products of the area, such as the Queso Picante da Beira Baixa or the Cabrito da Beira.
  • Dinner with typical products of the area, such as Cabrito da Beira or Vino Callum.

7th Day

  • Breakfast.
  • Return to the city of origin.

How to get to Penamacor

  • By road by private car is the fastest route. If we leave from Madrid we must take the A-62 and CV148. The Duration of the Journey is 3 hours 58 mins.
  • By train from Madrid, you have to take a night train for the Madrid-Guarda (Portugal) route from the Chamartín train station, and then a taxi to Penamacor (Portugal). The duration of the journey is 7 hours 12 mins.
  • By public bus from Madrid (South Station) you must take the bus in the direction of Penamacor. The duration of the journey is 7 hours 19 mins.
